We had 6 weeks of very dry weather but all that has changed with Francine. Yesterday, the storm gave us a glimpse of her strength. She struck Louisiana and brushed past New Orleans and Baton Rouge. She then set her path along the Louisiana Mississippi border and proceeded north. That path is about 200 miles to our west.
We began to notice gusty winds early yesterday morning and experienced them until about sundown. According to local weather watchers, we had gusts approaching 4o mph with sustained winds of 15 to 20 mph. It has settled down today. Fortunately, no trees or tree limbs were blown down but it did knock down a lot of leaves, pine straw and small branches. Some of my perennials also took a beating and I had to do some cutting back to restore them.
Rainfall was less than 1 inch for my yard. There is still some expectations of rain for the next 3 days as all the upper air disturbance has its effects.

The coreopsis is a late bloomer. It has a very bright and cheery color.
The Surprise Lily (Lycoris radiate) has several common names including Red Spider Lily. It is completely invisible until it sends up the shoot with this striking bloom each fall.
This Sedum is putting on this rosy color and so I am submitting it again this week.
This beetle also has several common names including Lady Bug, Lady Beetle and ladybirds. To me, most importantly, they are consumers of aphids. This one looks a little battered from the aphid wars.
The coneflowers are still blooming as you can see. I wanted to show the seedheads which are frequented by the goldfinches. I will leave these food sources undisturbed for them.

A grew Coreopsis for the first time this year. Quite easy to get going and a lasting display of blooms.
We did receive plenty of rain overnight. Rain is forecast for the next three days. Feast or famine, right.
Coreopsis reseeds in my garden. I love the bright colors.
I heard that Francine hit Louisiana and I mostly read about the damage. My son is going there next week for the first time and I hope all goes well without any more storms during his trip. Unfortunately you didn’t have much rain… that would have been great for your garden… anyway I love your red lily this morning as well as this purple coneflower.

We have not read or heard of significant damage in New Orleans. The storm bypassed it. The only concern there was if the sewage system could handle all the rain without overflowing.
There are no other storms forecast so your son should enjoy beautiful fall weather. I have visited New Orleans many times both in spring and in fall.
There is abundant rain today. I have recorded 2.60 inches overnight.

My favorite tourist things in New Orleans are a trolley ride on St. Charles street and a visit to the WWII museum.

I think a band from Francine blew through here Wednesday night, a huge downpour. Hurricane rains are always impressive. I love those surprise lilies.
The goldfinches have been busy at mine also! They scold me if I do not keep the ant moat fresh, as they think it is their mini bar. Glad you didn’t get hit too hard. No rain here, and none forecast, except isolated thunderstorms possible tonight, but expected west of where I am.
Sorry for the damage, but it sounds like your plants came out OK. By the time Francine’s winds reached us here in Wisconsin, there was no more rain, although we need some. Your Echinacea blooms still look very healthy and the lady bug and birds seem happy.
