Yesterday, our temperatures began to moderate. This morning we were below 70 F. It has been many weeks since we have experienced a low in the 70’s. The plants look noticeably relieved. We have had only short showers of rain at my house these past weeks but selected locations have seen much more. I am still irrigating the yard.
The autumn is here. The calendar says it is. Now, the plants are showing that they believe it by showing more fall color.
In addition, some fall fruit is appearing. I have some of my persimmons to show you.

Here is my six, well, maybe 7.
1. Prairie Coneflower
This is a spring bloomer but after the spring bloom I did a Chelsea chop. The plant tends to flop after blooming so this was aesthetic. The reward for that is the reappearance of the wonderful, bright yellow blooms.
2. Canna
I don’t remember planting his bulb but I will take it for this phenomenal red. You can catch a glimpse of Physostegia (obedient plant) and Rose of Sharon in the background.
3. Sedum
Now known as ‘Live-Forever’ and genus Hylotelephium. Why change? Sedum is so much simpler and memorable.
4. Persimmon
This Japanese persimmon ‘Fuyu’ produced very well this now its 9th year. I counted 30 of them. They are all on low hanging branches and I intend to prune it to keep it that way. The color of the fruit as it matures is enough to bring pleasure. I have learned not to leave it on the tree too long for it quickly becomes overripe.
5. Red Spider Lily
The red surprise lily is aptly named. The stalk arises and opens so quickly that most often it is a surprise.
6. Purple Coneflower
This beautiful native is a favorite of mine. I recently bought a cultivar of this ‘Magnus’ and I will soon plant it. The birds love to come pick the seeds and the butterflies and insects come for the nectar.
Precipitation Past 2 weeks
At my house, I have had only 0.62 inches of rain during September. This rain gauge is at the Corner Garden, where I volunteer. It is 3 miles from my house. I would love to have shared some of this rain at my house.
