Petals & Hurricanes Oct 9

Hurricane Isaias is moving toward us today. Even though I am 250 miles inland, the wind in rain are forecast to be significant. This is the first hurricane to hit the US mainland this year. In fact, it may be the only one for the last two years. With all of today’s technology, I confess to taking a look at the storm’s progress often.

The most impressive photo of my six today is a close up of a Carpenter Bee taken by my fellow gardener, Sam. Thank you to Sam. I do have some camera envy.

Six on Saturday. I will join in tomorrow and post this blog. I will have an update on the storm. Please keep the people of South Alabama, and all in the storm’s massive wake in your prayers. We are all very anxious today.

1. Obedient Plant

Obedient Plant

I have shown you other photos of this beauty in the past few weeks. Its upright habit and the beautiful color still thrill me.

2. Rudbeckia triloba

Brown Eyed Susan

The Rudbeckia triloba is another favorite native of mine. Sun and part shade, it has really shown out this year.

3. Mexican Petunia

Ruellia simplex

This one does get “thuggish” and so I keep it in a container. It has been blooming all summer but has a new ‘growth spurt’ in the fall.

4. Honey Bee on Salvia

Honey Bee

I must have a beekeeper nearby. I have read that they may travel as far as 5 miles from the hive.

5. Hemerocallis

Hemerocallis fulva

This is also known locally as the ditch lily where it is often found in rural areas. I like it because it keeps showing blooms for many weeks.

6. Carpenter Bee Macro

Carpenter Bee

I am ending with this macro shot of a carpenter bee. Stunning detail.

Happy Gardening! Stay Safe My Friends.

  1. Bee safe!

  2. It’s true that there haven’t been any hurricanes so far this year—which is very rare! With this one approaching, it’s certain to hit the coast, but will it lose its strength by the time it reaches you? In any case, be careful and stay safe. I hope your garden doesn’t suffer any damage; regarding your Six, I had tried growing Ruellia without success, as the seeds didn’t germinate. I’ll give it another try. And this last close-up is absolutely stunning!

    1. The hurricane did strike the coast where many friends have second homes. It is too early for damage assessment there. Here, inland there are power outages although not at my house. I must await daybreak to assess damage to the garden. My security camera did catch a raccoon gathering acorns at 3 am.

      1. Near which city (one I know 😅) do you live?

      2. I live in a suburb of Birmingham.

      3. I didn’t know there was another Birmingham besides the one in the UK 😂

And yes, you’re right on its way. Stay safe.

      4. There is a Birmingham in Michigan. Many duplicate names in USA. Several towns named Paris for example.

I noticed this year that I saw honeybees in my garden in early spring and now in fall. most f the year I saw only native bees. Reminds me – I should head down to the farmer’s market today and pick up some honey in preparation for making my Grandma’s lebkuchen recipe which I send out to people at Christmas. Do you find Obedient Plant to be aggressive? I like it, but am not sure how it behaves. The macro photo has me getting camera envy too!

    1. Obedient plant is aggressive. I tolerate it because the tall stalks are easy to pull out. I suppose it could be called ‘Disobedient Plant’.

  4. Hurricanes must be terrifying. I don’t even like strong winds. That bee shot is amazing.

Your flower images are stunning. The close up of the bee is my favorite. I hope your came through the hurricane with no serious issues.

  6. It’s now after 4 pm. It’s been very calm all day. The forecast was 2-4″. My rain gauge shows less than half an inch since yesterday. I am glad Isaias is nothing like Helene, but I was definitely hoping for more.

Yes, that carpenter bee macro is really special! I like all your other “six” images, too. I hope all is well with you after the hurricane. I see that it is direcly over your area just now. Sometimes we get increased precipitation here in S. Wisconsin from the remnants of Gulf Coast hurricanes, but it looks like the tail end of the storm track will be over Michigan this time. Stay safe!
